| Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe |
| Born 1951, in Chicago,
Moutoussamy-Ashe is best known for her street photography, which focused on the everyday
triumphs and defeats of families residing on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. Her
creative and informative images about everyday happenings around the island have left a
legacy of visual memories for the next generation of Daufuskie Island families.
Moutoussamy-Ashe is also noted for her extensive research, which investigated the lives
and photographic work of forgotten black women photographers over the last century. As a
result of her research, Moutoussamy-Ashe published a priceless text titled, Viewfinders:
Black women Photographers. Currnetly, Moutoussamy-Ashe resides in New York where she
continues to photograph life.
